Cycling is in our DNA: The legacy of cycling here in Northern Ireland

With May 2017 marking the 128th birthday of the modern-day bicycle here in Northern Ireland, we thought we would take a moment to appreciate the innovation of our very own 'claim to fame' John Boyd Dunlop -  the Belfast-based inventor of the modern bike tyre.

Dunlop worked together with William "Willie" Hume (an Irish cyclist) to prove the success of the pneumatic tyre. In 1889, Willie demonstrated the complete superiority of Dunlop's newly invented tyres (something we cyclists might take for granted now!). The pneumatic tyres were quite unlike any of the time, filled with air they boasted a much more dynamic ride which gave a new freedom of movement to the cyclist. Willie went on to win each race he entered in Ireland and then England as well.

The new modern detachable pneumatic bicycle tire contributed to the popularity and eventual dominance of the safety bicycle we all know and love today! Of course, these rubber pneumatic tires are now seen on millions of cars across the world are the result of many inventors recognisable to anyone who's ever bought tires for their car. Michelin, Goodyear and of course Dunlop.

Here at See.Sense we remain inspired by the legacy created by Hume and Dunlop’s leap of innovation. Back in 2014 we developed a special 'Corsa Rosa' edition of our intelligent cycle lights which was inspired by the exciting Grande Partenza or ‘Big Start’ of the Giro d’Italia which took place right here in Northern Ireland from 9-11 May 2014. THE GROWTH OF CYCLING IN NI

Belfast is all about bikes now! With new cycle paths, extensions of greenways and the Belfast Bike sharing scheme expanding out to over 40 docking stations, the cycling revolution isn't stopping any time soon.

Cyclists from across the country are waiting on a re-formed Executive for the creation of a "pivotal" bridge to transform access to Belfast city centre by bike. Bikefast today calls for it to be officially named the Hume Dunlop Bridge

We at See.Sense are driven by the same values as Dunlop, continuing to create products that cyclists love and are proud to use.
