Don’t get us wrong, cycling is great all of the time, but what's even better is being able to enjoy getting out on the bike in the lighter and brighter weather. There are fewer layers to put on, longer hours spent out on the bike and having your coffee alfresco with your cycling friends sitting in the sun.
Summer is a fantastic time for cycling, and now the Tour de France is in full swing we are all feeling extra inspired to head out on the bike that bit more often. And with sportive season just around the corner, it’s a great time to ride a bit further too.
But to fully enjoy cycling in the summer months and warmer weather (fingers crossed for the UK), you'll need to take a few precautions. With most of our team members being keen cyclists (it's usually only a matter of time for those who aren’t yet…) we are always keen to share our top tips with each other and recommend our favourite bits of cycling kit. So with that in mind, here are our favourite summer products for cycling (along with some top tips) which will help you stay cool and ride strong all summer long.
A couple of light, short sleeved jerseys at a decent price will be a complete must have for anyone's summer cycling kit, especially whenever one or more of them is in your washing basket at home! You can pay anything from about £10 right up to £150 (wow) for a cycling jersey, but an expensive one isn't necessarily 20 times better. That’s why here at See.Sense we are all big fans of the dhb brand from Wiggle / CRC as the quality and fit of them is great in our opinion, and they will last you season after season.
Who doesn’t love a little bit of novelty in cycling? And who doesn’t love a new cycling cap? They are one of the best and easiest ways to keep the sun and rain out of your eyes as well as changing up your look on the bike. This quirky cap from our fellow Northern Irish cycling company is definitely one for your collection, especially for summertime.
A quick shout out for our own little product which has proved to be super popular with See.Sense customers in the past few weeks since we launched it. Quite a bit of thought has gone into the design of the Phone Pouch making it your ideal ride companion to keep your things neat and secure when riding. You can see some of the reviews of the phone case here.
Another summer jersey, but this time from our other Northern Irish cycle clothing designer, Galibier. The beats jersey is a new number to the 2019 range and it’s right up our street. We can also vouch for the quality, fit and durability of the Galibier kit, with most of our team owning at least a few garments each!
Who doesn't need another pair of cycling socks? These socks from DeFeet feature a subtle Dawn Blue colour combination to brighten up your morning ride!
So in this guide, we’ve added a bit of summer colour to you, why not add some to the bike as well? Apparently it’s been seen on the likes of Cavendish and Sagan’s bikes. Good enough for them?...
Rising temps are no reason to hide inside on the trainer with a fan, no matter how tempting it might be to attempt that stage of the Tour de France using your Zwift. So here’s another one for your bike (don’t neglect the bike, don’t neglect the bike) especially your tyres. I guess it’s a bit more of a practical one as well. The tyres are the only part of your bike which actually touch the road remember, so make sure you use a decent brand like GP which are currently going at a good deal.
They say the biggest hot-weather mistake cyclists can make is riding in the heat without preparation… preparation being hydration. You will sweat a bit more (as we all know) as your body naturally tries to cool itself down in the summer heat. So drink little and often. The High5 Hydration tablets can be used before and during exercise and are great as they add flavour to your water while being zero calories too.
