Reasons to ride more in 2018

Lose weight, move more, eat better. Lots of us are now embarking on at least one new lifestyle change to help us meet our goals for the year ahead.

Whether you want to to improve your fitness, lose some weight, tone up (or if it’s just an excuse to buy yourself some new cycling kit) - riding your bike is one of the best ways to get fit, stay fit and keep healthy. And with some preparation, self-belief and determination you can do whatever you set your mind to. Smash your goals and feel a hell of a lot better about yourself for doing it. There are so many reasons why you should ride more in 2018. Here are our top 5:

1. It’s a realistic New Year's resolution

Making more journeys by bike is an achievable goal for 2018. You can cycle on your own, with friends or as a family activity too. Some reasons for cycling are obvious and some are not, but you can use your bike for fitness training, commuting to work, or just for riding to the shops and you will enjoy it and feel the difference.

Cycling to work is a great way of fitting in exercise into your busy routine without reallyhaving to make the time for it or think about it too much.Taking to your bike can get you to work quickly and keep you fit and healthy at the same time.

2. Socialise while getting fit

While some people prefer to ride alone, some of the best times can be had when cycling with a club or group of friends! You will keep each other motivated, call out the holes ahead and enjoy getting fitter together.

Signing up for a sportive and training with others is probably one of the best pieces of advice we can give you. You’ll soon master your routes and add more miles on each time you go out together, getting fit without thinking too hard about it! So why not organise a weekly spin with your friends or colleagues as we do here at See.Sense.

Another option would be to sign up for your local cycling club. Joining a club is a great way to get the most out of your cycling, whether you are a serious cyclist or a complete beginner taking on a New Year's resolution. Most clubs will offer a variety of routes to suit all types of cyclists and they will also have a great social side to the club too.

3. Save the pounds (and the lbs)

Cycling is one of the best ways to save money and lose weight. Ditching the car for some (or all) of your journeys is one of the best changes you can make - and you’ll see results quite quickly. It’s also a much more attainable and affordable goal to keep than having to make time (and pay for) the gym.

Cycling is also good for your mental health, with exercise now being viewed as a common treatment for depression, with four times as many GPs prescribing regular activity as positive therapy!

4. You're never too old to ride your bike

You are never too young - or old - to enjoy cycling.The bike saddle holds 70% of your total body weight, so pressure on your joints is really low.

Riding your bike can be as low impact a sport as you like and you can go along at your own pace. So it’s never too late to start! Why not introduce someone else in your life to get into cycling too?
