The project has involved the recruitment of 200 cyclists and aims to enhance the safety of cyclists in Birmingham by collecting and analysing anonymised data such as:
Speed and dwell times
Movement patterns and swerve
Collision and near-miss events
Heavy braking incidents

RoSPA places great emphasis on using real life examples to stress the importance of what they do; ultimately it is about saving lives and protecting people from serious injury. The project will examine data on pedal cycle collisions from Stats 19 and data from the bike light episodes to see whether there is a relationship and whether it is possible to develop a model for predicting cyclist casualties.

“This is a cutting-edge project that uses the latest technology to develop data-driven insights that will make Birmingham’s road safer for cyclists, and we’re really excited to get started. Using information gathered as cyclists undertake their normal ride, we’ll be able to gain insight about problem areas, such as potentially-dangerous junctions or poorly-maintained roads. And, crucially, you’ll be able to report any near misses or non-injury collisions that you have, to give us a really good picture of where more serious incidents could take place.”
