Thanks to funding from the Department for Transport, The Bikeability Trust are working with researchers at Brunel University London and See.Sense to look at visual learning factors for children undertaking Level 2 Bikeability Training. The study aims to use its findings to support more children to go on to complete Level 3 Bikeability Training. One element of the study will involve 50 children (with parent/carer consent) using a See.Sense ACE rear bike light on their rides. The lights are able to collect data on rider behaviours and road conditions to support the study. Children will need to use their light on every ride (day or night) and to make sure it is connected to the mobile app.
The See.Sense ACE bike light is an award-winning light that helps to make cycling safer by being visible in daylight and reacting by flashing brighter & faster in riskier moments. It also connects to a free companion app to provide you with a range of connected features, and to allow data to be shared with the project. Find out more about See.Sense ACE bike lights here.
As a participant you and your child can use the free See.Sense app to obtain your child’s personal ride stats, in an easy to use, and inspiring way. The stats include distance travelled, calories burned, and CO2 saved. The parent will also optionally receive a personalised monthly ‘Vision’ email showing your child’s personal ride stats, allowing a month to month comparison.
Sensor data insights gathered from the devices will also be shared with the project to help evaluate the programme, and also to help understand and improve conditions for cycling. The data insights shared include routes, speed, dwell-time, braking, swerving, road surface roughness, perception reports (from reports made by the user in-app).
In order to receive the See.Sense light and participate in the Widening Participation project, the parent or guardian must first provide consent for the child to participate. For information about the Mobile App terms and conditions and Mobile App privacy policy for this project, please click here.
We advise that the parent/guardian creates a privacy zone in the app, to protect the home address of any individual. A video guide on setting up a privacy zone can be found here.
