See.Sense Wins Prestigious Prince Michael Road Safety Award
The Prince Michael Technology Award recognises See.Sense’s recent Proof of Concept collaboration with Transport for London (TfL), in which See.Sense cycling sensor data was used to advance road safety.
The See.Sense - Transport For London Vision Zero Proof of Concept (POC) project enhanced cycling safety in London by utilising See.Sense smart bike lights as sensors. By gathering crowdsourced sensor data from See.Sense lights used by cyclists in the city, the project provided insights into cycling conditions and potential risks, supporting TfL's Vision Zero targets.
Established in 1987, the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards originally recognised those who had improved road safety throughout Britain. The Awards now highlight outstanding achievement and innovation across the world. For over thirty years His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent has played a leading role in supporting improved road safety both in the United Kingdom and globally, pushing road safety up the policy agenda.
Data collected in London between 2019 and 2022 - totaling 5.4 billion sensor readings - was used by TfL to identify underlying risks for cyclists on London's road network, as well as aiding risk modelling and creating a comprehensive view of road safety, guiding safety interventions.
As Alex Drake, Data Scientist at TfL explained, “Overall, See.Sense data was able to provide standardised sensor data insights on cycles across London. These new insights will enhance the effectiveness of our risk model and therefore contribute to our understanding of the risk of collision, helping London to achieve its Vision Zero ambition.”

In recommending the award, the judging panel stated. “His Royal Highness has approved the recommendation of the judges that See.Sense should receive his award in recognition of the successful use of sensor data to provide insights into cycling conditions and potential risks in London. In making the recommendation the judges were especially impressed by the innovative way in which granular, sensor data was being used.”
